Experiencing Ignition Trouble – Here’s What to Do

There some motorist who enjoy driving luxury vehicles and some who simply like driving a modest vehicle. Regardless of what type of vehicle you prefer to drive, chances are that you don’t want to walk, which is why you should view driving as a privilege. Driving doesn’t come without problems though. Few, as they might be, it is still far more convenient to drive than it is to walk. When you are not having any type of maintenance performed on your vehicle then you are bound to experience problems from time-to-time. Some things are simply out of your control but if you’re experiencing ignition issues, this is likely something that you could have prevented. However, now that you have come to this point, you likely want to know what you can do to resolve it.

There are those who think that if their key looks ok that there is nothing wrong with it. This is not true. When the key has even the smallest defect, such as being cut incorrectly or slightly bent, it will enter the ignition incorrectly and could then become stuck. There are all sorts of common problems that could cause you ignition trouble. If you’re unable to remove your key from the ignition, here are some things that our locksmiths suggest you try.

When the vehicle is in the ON position:

  • Check to make the vehicle gear is in the PARK position. If it is not it will not release the key and you will not be able to start your car.
  • Look at the dashboard to make sure that the gear is in the right position. Sometimes you can accidentally knock it out of gear.
  • You can gently wiggle the key to see if you can loosen the key while it is in the ignition. Remember to do this very gently so that you do not break the key off in the ignition.

When the vehicle is in the OFF position:

  • Check the battery. We know that this sounds like a practical thing to do but you might be surprised to learn that not every driver knows that this is something that can prevent them from removing the key from the ignition. Therefore, it is certainly worth mentioning. If you have a dead battery, there is no way that your vehicle engine will start.
  • Again, you can loosen up your key by gently wiggling it back and forth in the ignition. You might be able to loosen it up enough to slide it out. Don’t be too anxious to get it out or you might just break it off inside the ignition.
  • Check to make sure that the key is in the right position. If you have an older key, sometimes it might enter the ignition incorrectly. Update the key to avoid having it get stuck in the ignition.

The above suggestions are being made because these are the same suggestions that we have offered to other motorists. They have tried them and, in most cases, they worked. However, we realize that not every motorist is going to be confident about handling this type of problem themselves. This is why they will often rely on our locksmiths to handle the problem for them.

Our locksmith will begin by checking the battery, which is what we would have suggested that you do yourself. However, if you don’t want to, we’re happy to do it for you. A locksmith can quickly come to your aid and have you back on the road again much sooner than you could yourself, which is exactly why so many people depend on our locksmiths for their service needs. Why take unnecessary chances when we are just a phone call away. You don’t want just any locksmith to come to your aid. Therefore, you’ll need to know how to find the right locksmith to help with your ignition problem.
